Biography

Belfast born pianist David McGrory began his studies at the age of four. During his career he has performed in London, Belfast, Edinburgh, Dublin, Munich, Brussels, Galway, Glasgow, Oxford, Leeds, San Antonio and Boston. In January 1999, he made his debut with the Ulster Orchestra at the Ulster Hall in Belfast.

          In 1998, David won the piano division and was an overall concerto finalist at the RTÉ Musician of the Future in Dublin.  He has also been a finalist at the Blacktie National Piano Competition in Ireland, won the Making Belfast Work Award at the West Belfast Classical Bursary, was an Honors Competition winner at the New England Conservatory, and a winner in the Concerto Competition at the Longy School of Music.  Most recently, he was a competitor at the 2006 Leeds International Piano Competiton.

          David’s sojourn into musical theatre began in Scotland at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  His career as a musical director began at the Birth of a Musical Festival produced by NOMTI.  Since then he has played for various Boston musicals including Kiss of the Spider Woman with Speakeasy Theatre Company, Beauty and the Beast with Fiddlehead Theatre Company and, as substitute musical director, Menopause: The Musical at the Stuart Street Playhouse.  He has been an assistant music director for   Sunday in the Park with George and City of Angeles with Boston Conservatory.  His music director credits include Grease with Emerson Stage, Dial M for Music, the 86th Annual Winton Club Cabaret, and Down There with The Boston Conservatory.

David has performed a series of lunchtime recitals and two concertos for the BBC.  He also took part in the “Vexations” Marathon at the Barbican Centre’s Conservatory in London.  In Boston, he has given a lecture-recital at the Goethe Institute on the lesser known contemporaries of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven and has performed across the area including Jordan Hall, Pickman Hall and the Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge.

David received his Bachelor of Music with Honours from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama   , a Graduate Diploma from the New England Conservatory and most recently an Artist Diploma from the Longy School of Music .

Currently, David lives in Boston with his wife, Laurie, and their twin girls.
